On Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed he had “personally approved” the search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida home. In a press conference, he did not provide a reason for the search but maintained that there was “probable cause” and said he had asked a court to make the case’s documents public.
“I personally approve the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter,” Attorney General Garland. “The department does not take such a decision lightly.” He called criticisms of the FBI following the unprecedented raid on a former president’s home “unfounded attacks.”
The FBI raid this week on President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence has sparked political controversy in an already divided country. It comes as the former president is considering another campaign for reelection.
President Trump also has stated that the raid as politically motivated and called it a “weaponization” of the Justice Department. “Nothing like this has ever happened to a president of the United States before,” he said.
